4.9 magnitude earthquake shakes California Santa Cruz 

The quake struck at 1:14 PM local time, centered approximately 12 miles southwest of Eureka, California.

Initially recorded as a 5.6, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) officially downgraded the event to a magnitude 5.4.

Residents reported feeling moderate to strong shaking as far south as Santa Rosa and as far north as the Oregon border.

The earthquake occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 9.3 miles, increasing the intensity of the surface vibrations.

 Minor structural damage, including shattered windows and cracked plaster, has been reported in downtown Eureka and Ferndale.

Local utility companies confirmed that approximately 15,000 customers briefly lost power following the initial jolt. 

Caltrans has temporarily closed Highway 101 near the Eel River bridge for a safety inspection to check for potential structural fissures.

The National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that there is no risk of a tsunami following this inland-coastal event.
