The owner of the Dallas Mavericks Mark Cuban recently in a podcast expressed positivity regarding Klay Thompson joining the team. Klay is a five-time All-Star who recently signed with the Mavericks, having spent thirteen seasons playing for the Golden State Warriors. According to Cuban, this role will change dramatically for Thompson, who has always played in an extreme pace and space concept.
Cuban mentioned that Thompson will mostly be stationed at the corner and will be available for shooting which will be created by Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving. He argued that whereas Thompson had to be on the move and run away from screens in Golden State, this would be different with the Mavericks as he would find shots easier at the corners and wings. Thus, this may in a way reduce the work load on Thompson during the game as it is not expected of him to run so much without the ball.
Still, Cuban argued that Thompson’s shooting ability – comfortably over the years around 40% from beyond the arc – would help them adapt to the Dallas’ isolation-style basketball practices. The Mavericks were unable to convert three-point opportunities with any efficiency during the recent playoffs, and the expectation is that Thompson would alleviate those offensive woes. Cuban has high hopes that together with Thompson’s abilities, the Mavericks’ offensive system will provide a successful season for the franchise.
