Forget fancy equipment or complicated rules, when it comes to getting active, Americans seem to favor a simple ball and a hoop. That’s right, basketball reigns supreme as the most popular sport in the US, according to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association (SFIA).
“It’s not just athletes who play basketball,” said Tom Cove, president and CEO of SFIA. “It’s accessible to everyone, boys, girls, all ages. You can shoot hoops at your local park or compete at the highest level internationally.” And this versatility, says Cove, is a huge part of the appeal: aiming for the pros, just having fun with friends, and always open to all.
And the stats prove it. A mighty 28.1 million Americans over the age of six lace up their sneakers for some b-ball action. Interestingly, basketball is the only team sport with participation in the double-digit range for both boys and girls (ages 6-12), which has made it a gender-friendly sport.
The NBA also serves to ignite passion among youth players. With NBA 2K video games, after following their favorite players, and favorite teams, that’s where connection lines to these kids’ hearts draw in this league. Furthermore, it goes further in that the NBA offers an exciting culture that will entertain because it touches on athletics with different diversity in players.
And it is no longer boys’ game. As more people watch the WNBA catch up and also participate in an event that was just carried out-the 3-point challenge, it is fitting to share female talent to a whole nation. When they see themselves on television and hence, young girls inspired, young girls go ahead and start chasing their dreams like everybody else does by bouncing the hoops around.
So what does all this mean for the future of basketball? SFIA says it’s an exciting time for the sport. Participation among youth keeps rising, with more and more kids picking up a ball each year.
“It’s incredible,” says Cove, “that a sport with only five players on the court has such massive popularity. It speaks volumes about its appeal.”
So the next time you hear the swish of a net or see someone dribbling down the street, remember: basketball is not just a game-it’s a cultural phenomenon that unites people young and old on and off the court. And who knows? Maybe you will ignite a new generation of basketball heroes with a game of ball in the park.
