The Sacramento Kings are showing interest in Jonathan Kuminga as he gets closer to restricted free agency. According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Kings are watching his situation but it doesn’t look likely that they will be able to sign him.
Other teams are also interested. Anthony Slater of The Athletic and ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Miami Heat could try to sign Kuminga as well. However, if another team offers him a deal, the Golden State Warriors can match it to keep him. Since the Warriors don’t have many young stars for the future, keeping Kuminga makes sense. But it’s also possible that Kuminga may want to leave. He has said he dreams of being a star who leads a team, and that may not happen in Golden State right now.
This gives teams like the Kings or Heat a chance to go after a talented young player. Kuminga has averaged 15.8 points per game over the last two seasons and still has room to grow. For Sacramento, this is a rare chance to try and sign a player with star potential. The Kings have not been a popular choice for top free agents in the past.
The Kings are also going through changes. They finished the season with a 40–42 record and traded De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs. They also fired their head coach Mike Brown and general manager Monte McNair. Now they’re looking to change the direction of the team.
Amick also said the Kings are open to making more changes and discussing different ideas for their roster. Signing Kuminga would be a risk because there’s no guarantee he will reach his full potential. But for the Kings, it might be worth seeing what it would take to bring him in and help the team move forward.
