Suns Involve in Durant Trade Idea That Shakes Up NBA Draft

The Phoenix Suns could trade away superstar Kevin Durant soon, as the NBA Draft approaches. The San Antonio Spurs are one team that keeps surfacing in trade rumors. But the Spurs appear reluctant to part with their prized No. 2 overall pick in return for Durant.

Bleacher Report scribe Dan Favale has concocted a doozy of a three-team trade that would serve to really mix things up. Here’s the way it would go down:

San Antonio Spurs receive: Kevin Durant and the No. 4 overall pick in the draft next year.
Charlotte Hornets receive: The No. 2 overall pick (from the Spurs) and two second-round draft choices.
Phoenix Suns receive: Harrison Barnes, Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan, Mark Williams, the No. 14 in this draft, San Antonio’s 2026 first-round pick, and a 2027 first-round pick (the second-best from Charlotte, Dallas, or Miami, passing through Charlotte).
Favale thinks this trade would be good for all the teams. For the Suns, Sochan and Williams are young, developing big men who could fill holes in their lineups and fit into their plans for the future. Barnes and Johnson would primarily be traded to balance salaries, but they also bring some veteran forward experience. This trade might even help the Suns cut costs and not have to pay luxury tax.

Favale also mentioned that Phoenix would rather acquire Devin Vassell from the Spurs rather than draft picks and other players because Vassell can complement Devin Booker well. That could mean too many redundant players on the Suns roster unless they are going to trade other superstars in the form of Bradley Beal or Grayson Allen.

With only one year remaining on Durant’s deal, having that many players, both veterans and young players, and draft picks would be a huge payout for the Suns. This kind of package, combining immediate assistance and future assets, is precisely what Phoenix might be seeking.

The NBA Draft will start on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Pacific Time, so the big trades may materialize in a matter of seconds.
